WORLD WETLANDS DAY 2022

“Wetlands Action for People and Nature”

On February 2, we celebrate World Wetlands Day, which this year is themed “Wetlands Action for People and Nature.” On this day in 1971, the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterflow habitat (also known as the Ramsar Convention) was adopted in the Iranian city of Ramsar. The aim of this Convention is to conserve and sustainably use wetlands at the national level and through international cooperation, as wetlands are among the most important and at the same time one of the most endangered ecosystems in the environment. For the first time in 25 years, International Wetlands Day is being held under the auspices of the United Nations International Day.

We dedicate this year’s World Wetlands Day to a better knowledge of the wetlands around us, because only then can we understand their importance for people and nature. One of these wetlands is the Škocjanski zatok Nature Reserve. This Mediterranean wetland with an area of 122 ha was threatened with complete destruction in the past due to planned drainage, but today it is an extremely suitable habitat for many plant and animal species, some of which are very rare.
